The
mature sperm head is coated in the acrosome layer which provides protection
and is removed prior to fertilisation.
Mitochondria provide the energy required for swimming. Sperm require
'capacitation' which enables whiplashing movements to occur. Capacitation
is induced by uterine fluid.
